The General Assembly of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has approved the renewal and extension of student contributions toward the construction of the Vice Chancellor’s 75th Legacy Project — the Student Experience Centre.

‎The approval comes after an official proposal from the UG@75 Anniversary Secretariat requesting a five-year extension of the GHC100 student levy, beginning from the 2025/2026 academic year.

‎However, the Assembly approved the extension with a condition: a two-year initial renewal, followed by another two-year period, and a final one-year phase — each subject to future approval by the house. This 2-2-1 arrangement keeps the extension within the proposed five-year window while allowing for periodic review.

‎In a letter signed by Co-Chair of the UG@75 Planning Committee Professor Clement Appah, the Secretariat also requested that the General Assembly nominate one student to serve as liaison between the Assembly and the Anniversary Secretariat to provide regular updates on project progress.

‎The Student Experience Centre is expected to be a flagship initiative of the UG@75 celebrations. Once completed, it will house key offices such as the Dean of Students, the SRC, the Academic Affairs Directorate, and the Careers and Counselling Centre. Other facilities will include a student clinic, co-working spaces for entrepreneurs, a fitness center, eateries, and a 3,000-capacity auditorium.

‎With an estimated project cost of $80 million, the university has partnered with fundraising firms Eban Capital and Nasco Feeding Minds to mobilize external support. The university has allocated land opposite the University Sports Stadium for the center, and an architectural plan has already been presented.

‎The sod-cutting ceremony is yet to be scheduled.

‎The GHC100 student contribution was first introduced during the 2022/2023 academic year under then SRC President Boakye-Lincoln and was approved by then General Assembly led by Speaker Ramzy Fuseini. Proceeds from the levy supported preliminary work on the project, including stakeholder consultations and the procurement of UG@75 cloth as souvenirs for contributors.
