UG: “Distance Education is stressful” – Students lament

Distance Education students at the University of Ghana have complained about the stress and exhaustion they face with their programmes.

Speaking to Univers News on their preparation for their end of semester examinations, the students shared that the conduction of their programmes makes it challenging for them to adequately understand the concepts contained in their courses.

The students additionally stated that online mode of studies, together with the tutorials organized by the Teaching Assistants remain insufficient to render their course’s concept less difficult to grasp.

“Distance Education is very stressful. You have to learn on your own, you have to prepare yourself because the lecturers see us as mature. Most of the courses are online so we don’t get to learn very well and understand the course, even with the extra classes from the TA’s we still have challenges.”

In anticipation of their end of semester exams they annotated that they are expecting the examinations to be set in a straightforward and uncomplicated manner.

“We are expecting something simple, even though we weren’t given any areas. No student will aspire to fail especially this period so we are expecting to do well and at the end get good grades. We expect that all arrangement put in place for student safety and arrangement put in place to eliminate examination malpractice will go on well for a successful exams.”

The School of Continuing and Distance Education is an extension of the programmes offered in the University of Ghana. Teaching and learning in the school is held in a hybrid format of onsite and online sessions.
