UG Council names new Registrar, Pro Vice-Chancellor for research

The University of Ghana (UG) Council has approved a series of high-level appointments, renewals, and academic promotions aimed at strengthening institutional governance, research leadership, and administrative efficiency across the University.

The decisions were taken at a Council meeting held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, after which the Office of the Registrar issued a communiqué outlining the approved leadership appointments and promotions.

Among the key decisions is the appointment of Mr Michael Opare Atuah as Registrar of the University, effective Saturday, August 1, 2026.

The Registrar serves as the chief administrative officer of the University and is responsible for academic administration, records management, institutional governance processes, and the coordination of major university operations.

In line with the University’s focus on innovation and global competitiveness, the Council also approved the appointment of Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development (RID), effective August 1, 2026.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (RID) role is central to the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of positioning the University of Ghana as a leading research-intensive institution by strengthening partnerships, advancing innovation ecosystems, and driving impactful scholarship.

As part of efforts to reinforce academic and administrative leadership, the Council further approved several senior-level appointments across schools, colleges, and administrative directorates. These include Professor Samuel Amponsah as Dean of the School of Continuing and Distance Education, Professor Gladys Nyarko Ansah as Dean of the School of Languages, and Mr Godfred Amoah as College Registrar of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences.

Additionally, distinguished literary scholar, poet, educator, and cultural activist Professor Kofi Anyidoho, alongside Professor Joseph Ronald Atsu Aryee, was elevated to Emeritus Professor status in recognition of their outstanding contributions to scholarship and national development.

The latest appointments and promotions underscore the University of Ghana’s continued commitment to academic excellence, strong governance, and research-driven development as it seeks to sustain its status as Ghana’s premier public university.
