The College of Humanities at the University of Ghana has marked the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) with a scholarly exhibition and keynote lecture focused on climate innovation and sustainability.

The event, held on June 20, was themed “Ghana’s Climate Innovation Landscape: Unlocking Potential with Science and Sustainability.”

The programme opened with an exhibition of academic works from various departments within the College, highlighting how humanities research contributes to scientific inquiry and national development.

Speaking at the event, Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Joseph Awetori, emphasised the importance of recognising the humanities as scientific disciplines in their own right. He called for greater visibility of the scientific depth embedded in humanities research.

Chairman of the event and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon Awandare, also addressed participants, highlighting an ongoing partnership between the University of Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation. The eight-year collaboration focuses on supporting research and innovation in climate change, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Director of Climate Change at the Forestry Commission, Roselyn Fosuah Adjei, outlined Ghana’s climate challenges and presented innovative sustainability strategies. These included upcycling in the textile industry, adoption of electric bicycles, and promotion of eco-friendly public transport systems.

She underscored the role of the humanities in helping communities understand and embrace sustainable practices, noting that while scientific solutions are available, behavioural change remains a key challenge.
