Head of the Junior High School (JHS) Department at the University of Ghana Basic School, Mr. Charles Avorde, has called for better treatment and improved working conditions for teachers across the country.
In an interview on Radio Univers’ Campus Exclusive on April 30, Mr. Avorde underscored the vital role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future and stressed the importance of providing them with the support they need to thrive.
“Teaching is one of the most important professions in this country. When teachers are treated well and their working conditions are improved, they become emotionally, financially, and psychologically equipped to carry out their duties effectively. A teacher who is not supported cannot give their best, and this has far-reaching consequences, just like a soldier without proper tools. Knowledge is power, and it’s linked to national security.”
Mr. Avorde further expressed concern about the lack of teaching materials and equipment, especially in public schools. He highlighted the impact this has on effective teaching and the development of discipline among students.
“There are critical aspects of education that require practical materials, yet teachers are often left without the tools they need,” he lamented. “Relying solely on theory limits students’ understanding and engagement. The government must ensure that schools are equipped with the necessary resources to facilitate impactful teaching and learning.”
He further urged authorities to prioritize teacher welfare and invest in the educational infrastructure needed to empower educators and inspire learners.
