Head Trainer of the University of Ghana (UG) Athletics Team, Emmanuel Bruce-Okine, has expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness as they gear up for major competitions scheduled for May 2026.

The UG Athletics Team is set to participate in two key events — the Mini GUSA Games and the UG Athletics Invitational Championship in May, both of which will be hosted by the University of Ghana.
These competitions form part of preparations toward the main Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games, with expectations high for strong performances from the home side.

Speaking to Univers Sports, Coach Bruce-Okine noted that the team remains focused and determined to excel, despite recent changes in the squad.

“Definitely, we are going in to bring something good. We are not just going to compete, but to win medals for the institution,” he said.

He acknowledged that some top-performing athletes have completed their studies and left the university but emphasized that this has not dampened the team’s ambition. According to him, efforts are underway to groom new talent capable of sustaining the team’s competitive standards.

The award-winning coach further revealed that about 100 students have been scouted and are currently in training as part of the rebuilding process. However, he pointed out that accommodation remains a major challenge for the team.

“We have identified and are training close to 100 students, but accommodation is a serious issue. We hope these challenges can be resolved ahead of our major competitions,” he added.

Despite the setbacks, Coach Bruce-Okine remains optimistic that with continued preparation and support, the UG Athletics Team will rise to the occasion and make the university proud in the upcoming events.
