Outgoing Chairperson of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Doris Kisiwa Ansah, has identified low alumni membership as one of the major challenges facing the  University’s Alumni Association.

She made the remarks on Saturday, 22nd January 2026, at the Association’s Annual General Meeting. The event saw the induction of a new Chairperson, two Vice Chairpersons, a General Secretary, and four elected Council Members to replace the outgoing executives.

Speaking to Univers News in a post-event interview, Madam Ansah lamented the low participation of University of Ghana alumni in the Association despite membership being an integral part of the association’s process.

” The Association thrives on membership and we’ve tried to bring a lot of members on board but there’s still a lot to be done because there are thousands and thousands of people who’ve passed through this prestigious university and we still need to bring them all on board. “

She also highlighted the difficulty the association has in securing funding for alumni-driven initiatives,

“The challenge is also sponsorship. We are virtually a non-profit-making association, and our aim is to help develop the University of Ghana. It takes money. So you find out that we depend on corporate bodies, we depend on individuals, and it’s not easy these days going to people for money. Everybody seems to be going to the same kind of companies for money, and this is where the big challenge is.”

Meanwhile, the incoming Chairperson of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Dr. Felix Addi, has assured members that the new leadership will work to strengthen and unite alumni groups.

“Now, going forward, we have a few institutional projects we need to do. First and foremost, we have to re-establish the alumni association. We have to open up the regional centres. We’re supposed to have 16 regions. We need to have the presence of alumni on those regions first. We also need to have our alumni consolidate all our alumni bases. We have alumni all over the world, but we don’t seem to liaise with them sufficiently yet. Some of them liaise with the University of Ghana directly. We need to have one centre, alumni centre, for all alumni everywhere on the globe.”

He also discussed plans to modify the frequency of the association’s general meetings and elections.

I mentioned that currently we do like a quadrennial type of AGM. We have to do better. It’s supposed to be every two years. We don’t wait for four years before we do elections. We have to do the AGM once a year. So we try and do that. So we have to build some of those governance structures so that we do things right. ”
