Debutant Austria recorded a surprising 2-1 win over Ghana at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo on Monday to move to the summit of group E in the ongoing U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana had participated consecutively in the previous six editions of the tournament and were bent favourite to nick a win.

However, 12 minutes into the game, Hannah Fankhauser’s finish from close range made a straightforward win a tall order for the Black Princesses.

The odds were stacked against Ghana at the break, with the team failing to overturn a goal deficit at half-time in the tournaments history.

Austria continued to dominate and were awarded with their second from the spot in the 75th minute as Nicole Ojukwu made no mistake from 12 yards.

Skipper Stella Nyamekye’s strike for Ghana was a little too late and served as mere consolation, rather than a trigger to spark an unlikely comeback.

Ghana’s struggles on open day continues, with the team winning once in seven open day attempts, and would slug it out against 2018 winners Japan on Thursday to compound to their miseries.
