Colombian Second Division club, Tigres FC have announced that their club president, Dr. Edgar Paez, has been shot dead following his team’s defeat on Saturday.
According to local media reports, the 63-year-old tactician was returning home in his car with his daughter after the 3-2 home loss to Atletico FC.
Edgar Paez had been at the helm of affairs for Tigres de Bogota since 2016, and was driving home from the club’s Metropolitano de Techo stadium in the capital city after their game, when he was targeted by two men on a motorbike.
As his daughter escaped unharmed from the incident, authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the murder.
The Veteran Coach received four shots to the neck and skull, after which he was immediately rushed to the Mederi Clinic. Paez died at the health center from the severity of his injuries.
The football club have released a statement on these undesirable events in the wake of the demise of their former president.
“The Tigres family and the sporting community are devastated by this event; this unfortunate incident took place today when he was returning to his home, after the match played against Atletico FC.”
“His commitment to the team and his dedication to the development of the sport in our region left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
President of the Major Division of Colombian Professional Football (DIMAYOR) which runs the Colombian professional leagues, Fernando Jaramillo added his voice to mourn the death of Paez.
“He was always distinguished by his respect for his friends, by his strong but respectful positions and by the love he professed for the sport that we are all passionate about: football,” Jaramillo said.
In a statement in the wake of Paez’s death, DIMAYOR has pledged to pay tribute to the president with black armbands and a minute’s silence in the league’s fixtures and competitions.
Tigres F.C. is currently in 15th place in the second division table through 13 matches, with two wins, eight losses and three draws amassing 6 points from a possible 39 points.
