Head of the Social Work Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Augustina Naami, has underscored the benefits of inclusivity for persons with disabilities, advocating for their full participation and integration in society.
She shared her insights with Univers News during the Disability Inclusion Campaign Walk, a culminating project by University of Ghana’s final-year social work students, aimed at raising awareness about the enduring challenges persons with disabilities encounter and offering actionable recommendations.
Through a walk from the University of Ghana to Atomic, the students engaged with the public, addressing misconceptions and promoting inclusivity for persons with disabilities, targeting various groups, including drivers, passengers, sellers, and residents.
Dr. Naami believes that the successful inclusion of persons with disabilities is crucial for national progress when they are given equal opportunities to participate in society.
“When persons with disabilities are educated and gain a source of income, they will become contributing members of society, they will pay taxes, support their churches through tithes and offerings, take care of themselves, and no longer be a burden to their families and the nation. They will break free from the cycle of poverty and begging on the streets, and instead, live dignified lives that enrich our communities,” she said.
She also highlighted the persistent accessibility challenges faced by persons with disabilities, emphasizing the need for stakeholders to prioritize their needs in all aspects of life.
“It’s crucial that we consider persons with disabilities in every situation, whether it’s constructing buildings, designing transportation systems, or creating public spaces, we must ensure that these facilities are accessible and user-friendly for everyone, regardless of their abilities. By doing so, we can promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all”, she said.
The campaign walk serves as a reminder that inclusivity is a collective responsibility, and together, we can create a brighter future for persons with disabilities.
