The 24/25 GPL was the cheapest to win but other things prevented Hearts of Oak – NCC PRO

Public Relations Officer of the National Chapters Committee (NCC), Kobby Jones, has described the just-ended 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season as one of the “cheapest” campaigns Accra Hearts of Oak could have won in recent years.

Speaking in an interview on Sports Night with Pius Asack, Jones did not mince words in expressing his disappointment over the club’s failure to capture the title, in a year where the competition, in his view, was more than beatable.

“The target of the board and management is to win the league next season — and that is the same target for the supporters. That’s where we should all work towards,” he said.

“Of course. Why wouldn’t we be confident? I mean, I’ve said this before: if you look at this year’s league, for me, it’s one of the cheapest leagues that we could have won. One or two things did not go well for us. The team that won the league won with just five points,” he added.

Hearts of Oak finished fourth last season, but that position came only after Nations FC were docked points late in the campaign.

Without that deduction, the Phobians would have placed fifth, a far cry from the top-two finishes expected of a club of their stature.

Fans were left frustrated by the inconsistency in results and called for the dismissal of the then-head coach, Aboubakar Ouattara.

In response, the club has appointed Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as the new head coach. The former Asante Kotoko and Ghana U20 manager is expected to bring tactical discipline, structure, and a developmental mindset to a squad that showed promise but lacked direction.

Jones’s comments reflect both a sense of regret over what might have been and a rallying cry for unity and ambition going forward.

With a new technical direction and the pre-season on the horizon, Hearts of Oak will aim to put disappointment behind them and fight for their place at the top of Ghanaian football.
