The State Housing Company (SHC) has announced plans to embark on a nationwide debt recovery exercise before the end of the year to collect monies owed by clients. The move, according to management, is aimed at improving the company’s liquidity to support its mandate of providing affordable housing for Ghanaians.

Speaking to journalists at the company’s head office in Accra, Managing Director John Bawa described the initiative as crucial to sustaining the operations of SHC in a highly competitive housing sector without government subvention.

“The State Housing Company is one of the few state agencies not directly supported by taxpayers. It is therefore important for clients to pay their arrears to keep the business afloat. Our records show that both public and private clients owe us millions of cedis in ground rents, leases, and statutory payments,” he said.

Mr. Bawa disclosed that the company is offering a 15 percent rebate to clients who settle their debts between now and December 31, 2025, as part of efforts to encourage prompt payment.

“We expect the exercise to be conducted smoothly between our officers and clients to preserve the positive relationship that has always existed. However, management reserves the right to take legal action where necessary,” he added.

As part of broader reforms, SHC will also launch a premium 24-hour service centre to facilitate document processing, payments, and other client services in line with government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

“We are setting up a premium 24-hour centre to improve transaction efficiency and serve our clients better. This aligns with government’s 24-hour Economy Initiative to boost productivity and job creation,” Mr. Bawa noted.

He further revealed that the company is engaging private sector partners to develop new affordable housing units to meet the growing demand across the country.

The briefing forms part of SHC’s efforts to update the public on its upcoming activities and reaffirm its commitment to ensuring accessible and sustainable housing for all Ghanaians.
