GNFS officer detained for allegedly photographing his vote for NPP candidates as police crack down on electoral violations ahead of Ghana’s elections.
A Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officer is in police custody after allegedly violating electoral rules during the special voting exercise in Walewale on Monday (2 December).
The West Mamprusi Municipal Police Command apprehended the officer on suspicion of photographing his completed ballot paper after casting his vote—a breach of Ghana’s voting regulations.
According to preliminary reports, the officer reportedly intended to share the photo as proof of his vote.
He is currently being held at the Walewale Police Station as authorities investigate the incident.
Meanwhile, 854 eligible special voters, including security personnel and election officials, are expected to participate in the constituency’s early voting exercise.
“Every ballot paper is unique and has a unique serial number. People who take photos of their ballots and share them risk being easily identified. The serial number can help investigators trace the said ballot paper to the specific polling station”.
“Since no polling station exceeds 750 voters, it would be easy to identify the specific ballot paper. As we use thumbprints to vote and all voters’ biometric data is with the EC, investigators can easily narrow it down to the voter. Please, voters, don’t break the law thinking you can’t be found out”!
