The Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana has held its first lecture to commemorate its 75th Anniversary.
The event, which took place at the WACCBIP Auditorium, brought together prominent individuals, faculty members, and students.
The lecture was chaired by Dr. Ohene-Konadu, a Senior Lecturer in the department and former Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
In his address, Dr. Ohene-Konadu challenged students to become vocal ambassadors for the discipline.
“Do you defend what you’ve learned? You’re always quoting people who may not even understand sociology. You must explain your sociology show what it can do,” he said.
The keynote lecture, titled “Post-Comtian Sociologists and the Priesthood of Sociologists,” was delivered by a former Head of the Department, Prof. Kodjo Senah. He urged faculty members to take a more proactive role in contributing to national discourse.
He proposed that the department secure a regular slot on the media to engage the public on socio-political issues and suggested forming partnerships with institutions and companies to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
“On this campus, we have an FM station, Radio Univers. We can ask for a spot. This would be used on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to discuss issues of local or national importance. Can’t we do this rather than wait for an FM station to chorus our views on some national issues? Another way, I think, is to invite relevant institutions or their reps to some of our seminars and some of our programs,” he stated.
The event concluded with a special presentation by the Anniversary Planning Committee to Prof. Senah, honouring his over 40 years of dedicated service to the department.
The next lecture in the anniversary series is scheduled for July 11 and will be delivered by Prof. Abena Busia.
