Although Borussia Dortmund were knocked out by Barcelona on a 5-3 aggregate scoreline in the Champions League quarter-finals, Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy etched his name in African Champions League goalscoring history.
Serhou Guirassy single-handedly led the charge to resuscitate Dortmund against a lacklustre Barcelona with a hat-trick.
The Guinean international scored his first from the spot in the first half before heading home a second two minutes after the break.
15 minutes from time, the lanky forward sealed his hat-trick with a deft finish from inside Barcelona’s box.
The goals took Guirassy’s tally to 13 for the on-going Champions League season – the most of any player this term and one ahead of Barcelona’s Raphinha.
Additionally, Guirassy made history as the first Dortmund player to score 13 goals in a single Champions League campaign, eclipsing Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski’s previous tallies of 10.
Guirassy has 17 goal involvements (13 goals, 4 assists) in the Champions League this term – the most ever by an African, surpassing Salah’s 14.
Most importantly, Guirassy became Africa’s leading scorer in a single edition of the Champions League (13 goals), smashing Sebastian Haller’s record (11 goals) from the 2021/22 season.
Dortmund have faced Barcelona twice this term, in the group and knockout stage, with Guirassy scoring all of his side’s goals against the Catalans.
His hat-trick also meant he is the first African player to achieve the feat against the Catalans in the Champions League.
