The Dean of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso has predicted that Senegal could be the next country in the subregion to have a coup if precautions are not taken.
He made the statement with reference to military coups that were common in the early years of independence in most African countries along with the recent coups that have become rampant in the West African region.
In predicting another coup in the West African region, the security expert warned the Senegalese president, Macky Sall to hastily address the growing level of insecurity in the country which has been exacerbated by continued protests and other security problems.
The self acclaimed ‘prophet of safety’ was speaking in an episode of The LowDown, which is set to be aired on GhanaWeb TV.
He explained some of the catalysts to the occurrences of coups in the Region.
“A state like Mali was going to have a civil war and there was going to be an implosion – the country was going to be divided: the Tuaregs wanted the northern part of Mali, against the south, and that kind of thing. In such a situation, there would have been no Mali today if the military hadn’t struck. And they struck as a unit, as an arm of government, or let me call it an institution which was built to save the state in terms of crisis, and they did. So was Guinea, so was Burkina Faso.”
Dr. Antwi-Danso spoke of how his predictions of Niger’s Power seizure.
“At that point, many of your colleagues who interviewed me, I predicted that Niger was a candidate for such a systemic coup ;it has happened. Let me tell you, Senegal is a new candidate if Macky Sall doesn’t stop what is happening, and if ECOWAS doesn’t take steps to talk to Macky Sall,” he cautioned.
Gabon is the latest country to follow in the footsteps of African nations that have had military coups over the past three years, which include Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso and preceedingly Niger.
Gabon’s president, Ali Bongo, was ousted by his cousin, Oligui Nguema, who was an aide to the country’s late president, Omar Bongo.
