The reigning Ballon D’or winner Karim Benzema has been ruled out of the world cup in Qatar due to a thigh injury he sustained during training.
The French national team said he had suffered a thigh problem and would not be able to feature in the tournament.
“The whole team shares Karim’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery,” it said.
The French Football Federation said an MRI scan confirmed a thigh muscle injury “which will require a three-week recovery period.”
He underwent medical tests after leaving training injured on Saturday – it was the first time he had taken part in full training session since the World Cup squad came together last week.
“I am extremely sad for Karim who made this World Cup a major goal. Despite this new setback, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything to meet the immense challenge that awaits us.” Deschamps said.
Benzema has now been added to the injury list of the french national team, which consists of Christopher Nkunku, Ngolo Kante, and Paul Pogba.
the absence of these stalwarts would be a big blow to the Le blues chances of winning the world cup, but the presence of superstar Kylian Mbappe and others gives them hope going into the tournament.
The Real Madrid man had played less than half an hour in his club’s past six games because of injury.
France will take on Australia in their first game of the tournament on Tuesday, November 22.
