The Dean of the School of Information and Communication Studies at the University of Ghana (UG), Prof. Abena Animwaa Yeboah-Banin, has paid tribute to the late former Station Manager of Radio Univers, Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed (Alhaji), describing his passing as a significant loss to both academia and Ghana’s media industry.
Delivering a tribute on behalf of the University at the 40 Days Duaa held at Dr. Sidick Ahmed’s residence in Madina on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Prof. Yeboah-Banin expressed deep sorrow over his death, noting that his contributions to student training and professional development were invaluable.
“News of the passing of Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed was received with grave sorrow and a heavy heart. Alhaji, as we affectionately called him, was not only the former Station Manager of Radio Univers but also a distinguished media practitioner and mentor whose legacy continues to resonate across Ghana’s media landscape,” she stated.
According to the Dean, the Department of Communication Studies highlighted Dr. Sidick Ahmed’s role in mentoring students, particularly through his involvement in practical training initiatives, including collaborations with UNICEF-related student programmes.
“We have lost something truly valuable in Alhaji. He played a key role in training our students, especially through initiatives involving UNICEF student programmes,” she noted.
Prof. Yeboah-Banin concluded that although he is gone, his legacy lives on through the many journalists he mentored and the enduring standards of professionalism he instilled.
“His influence endures in the voices on our airwaves, the professionalism of journalists across the nation, and the countless lives he inspired. Alhaji will be remembered for his devotion to mentoring the next generation of broadcasters and shaping the future of Ghanaian broadcasting.”
