Chief executive officer of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah, has revealed that the decision to sack their head coach Seydou Zerbo was due to incessant pressure from supporters and threats from some board members of the club.
Nana Yaw Amponsah went ahead to say that the club’s management opposed the decision to fire their former head coach because they felt he could turn things around in the Betpawa Premier league despite their inconsistent performance. T
The porcupine warriors were satisfied with Seydou Zerbo’s performance but were compelled to dismiss the coach due to fan pressure and threats from some board members following surprised two-nil home loss to Medeama sporting club.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko has been battling with some internal wrangling both on and off pitch issues among them is the firing of their head coach Seydou Zerbo.
Commenting on the firing on of the coach, Nana Yaw Amponsah stated that management wanted to maintain him but they had to succumb to pressure from the supporters to save the club.
“We did not bow to just calls for him to go, NO. I think that management knew where the club was, we knew what he was capable of but we picked up strong intel that some people had plotted or planned to go and attack him at the training grounds similar to what happened with Matic and Hearts of oak. We felt that such a thing happening would not be in the best interest of the club especially with the image of the club. we engaged him, he also said he had some engagement with his embassy here and they had reiterated same. So we felt that if he is falling out of love we should just save ourselves that trouble,” he said.
He also indicated that the decision was taken to prevent a possible outrage of the fans which could possibly lead to an attack on the gaffer.
“If you ask any management member we were not happy with him going because we felt that we still had a chance with him in the league. There were a majority of supporters who wanted him out, I remember after the match with hearts of oak in Accra I had to step in otherwise he would have been attacked. Even some persons I know but is not necessary now,” the CEO of Kotoko added.
After thirty appearances in the Betpawa premier league this season, the porcupine warriors lie sixth on the league log with forty-four points with eight points adrift league leaders Aduana stars and two points behind fourth placed Berekum Chelsea.
The defending champions will be hoping the managerial adjustments made will salvage their season as they are on the brink of going trophyless and missing out on top four.
