Former Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, has appealed for a clear separation between sports and politics, emphasising that political interference continues to stifle the growth and proper management of Ghanaian sports.

Speaking in a firm and combative tone during a press conference at the Accra Sports Stadium —just days after formally stepping down from his role as GBA President—Neequaye expressed deep frustration over the current state of affairs.

He accused both the Sports Minister and the Director General of the National Sports Authority of politicising the sector, warning that such interference undermines efforts to develop sporting talent in the country.

“I will also encourage the board members I’m leaving behind that the NSA and the Ministry [Sports] have no right to set the GBA aside. They don’t have that right. They should not bring politics into sports; sports is different and politics is different,” he said.

“Sports is sports, politics should stay away. I am a politician, and they are having issues with me, that is why I’m staying away from sports, so they should also stay away from sports,” he concluded.

Following his dramatic resignation, 2nd Vice President Roger Barnor has now taken over leadership as the new President of the Ghana Boxing Authority.
