A political scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah Asante has stated he would assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill if it is passed by Parliament, framing the issue as a matter of national sovereignty.

Speaking on the Joy News AM show, Dr. Asante emphasized that while he is not opposed to any law, the government must be able to generate its own resources to maintain independence.

He argued that relying on external financial support allows foreign interests to influence national decisions.

“I’m not against any law that is passed because laws are simply the will and expression of the people meant to regulate human conduct,” he stated. “But in global politics, if you rely on others for resources to support your country, they can push all sorts of things down your throat. So if Ghana wants to avoid that, we must generate our own resources to run our own affairs.”

He acknowledged that any stance the country takes is its choice, but Ghanaians must be ready to face both the positive and negative consequences of those decisions.

“So for me, I have no issue with any decision the country makes, including the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. But we must be ready for both the positives and negatives that come with it,” he added.
