Hearts of Oak won the 2024 Gbese Mantse Homowo Charity Peace Cup, after beating Kpando Heart of Lions 8-7 on penalties.

The highly anticipated charity match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The match kicked off with Ga Gbese Mantse Nii Ayi-Bonte II performing the ceremonial kickoff.

Hearts of oak boss Aboubakar Ouattara, started with eight new players, including goalkeeper Benjamin Asare and striker Kwame Boateng.

Heart of Lions, on the other hand fielded a strong line up, with Kwadwo Obeng Jr scoring against his former club inside three minutes after kick-off.

Despite several attempts, the Phobians couldn’t equalize in the first half.

With just two minutes remaining, substitute Mohammed Hussein capitalized on Ransford Mensah’s free-kick which hit the crossbar.

The match then advanced to penalties, where Hearts of Oak emerged victorious 8-7, securing the cup in a thrilling conclusion.

This remarkable win marks a positive start for the Phobians, who are hoping to build momentum for the new season after a disappointing 14th-place finish last season.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak have announced the appointment of Nana Yaw Amankwah as their new assistant coach.

Amankwah joins from Medeama, where he served as an assistant coach.
