Otto Addo becomes the first coach to qualify Ghana for back-to-back FIFA World Cups

Head coach of the  Black Stars of Ghana, Otto Addo, has written his name into the history books of Ghanaian football by becoming the first coach to lead the national team to consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Otto Addo achieved this remarkable milestone after guiding the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

After stepping down from his role following the 2022 World Cup, he returned for a second stint in early 2024.

Despite failing to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided to retain him — a decision that has paid off massively.

With this latest achievement, Addo cements his legacy among Ghana’s most distinguished coaches, joining the likes of Ratomir Dujković (2006), Milovan Rajevac (2010), and Kwesi Appiah (2014) — all of whom have led the Black Stars to the global stage.

Historically, Ghana reached the Round of 16 in 2006 and the quarterfinals in 2010, but suffered group-stage exits in their last two appearances, including under Otto Addo in 2022.

The coach will now be looking to rewrite that narrative and guide the team beyond the group stage when the world’s biggest football festival takes place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
