The Old Vandals’ Association, North America (OVANA), made up of alumni from the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, has issued a firm call to the government to address the escalating illegal mining crisis, known as “galamsey.” The group warned of potential nationwide protests if immediate action is not taken.

In a communiqué dated October 7, 2024, OVANA raised alarm over the widespread environmental damage caused by galamsey, pointing to the destruction of farmland, contamination of water bodies, and severe health risks to local communities. They expressed deep concern over the lasting impact on Ghana’s agriculture and public health.

“We cannot remain silent while our environment is devastated for the profit of a few,” OVANA stated. They joined forces with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and other organizations, urging the government to step in and halt illegal mining operations immediately.

OVANA demanded the declaration of a state of emergency on galamsey, a total ban on small-scale mining activities, and the repeal of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which allows mining in forest reserves. They also called for an overhaul of the country’s mining laws to meet global environmental standards.

The association further emphasized the release of detained anti-galamsey protesters, underscoring the right to peaceful demonstration. OVANA challenged presidential candidates to commit to tackling galamsey in their platforms for the upcoming election.

They gave the government a two-week ultimatum to take concrete steps or face nationwide student-led demonstrations, stressing that galamsey threatens the future of the entire nation.

“The time to act is now,” OVANA declared, rallying Ghanaians, civil society, and the global community to join the fight to safeguard the country’s natural resources.
