National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Team Member, Nuong Faalong, has called for strict monitoring of individuals entrusted with the care of children.

Her comments came after reports of two toddlers allegedly drugged by their nannies.

Speaking on TV3 Newday on 9th October 2025, she cautioned parents against placing blind trust in caregivers, stressing the need for constant checks and supervision.

“Humans in positions of care should be closely monitored. Caregivers, when you leave humans without monitoring them, there’s a tendency for them to operate in ways that will come back to bite. For parents, I think it’s very critical,” she explained.

“One of the things I noticed was that they drug these children so they can attend to other house chores. The kids are pretty young. This was just completely extreme,” she noted.

“I don’t think there’s anyone you can trust completely with your children apart from yourself. So once you have to leave them with someone else, there has to be some checks and balances just to keep your mind at ease.”

She further urged parents to revive the communal style of parenting practiced in the past, advising them to rely on credible family members for support, but emphasized that constant monitoring must remain essential.

“So we have to look at extra ways of monitoring the people ,even when you leave them with family. We have to be more communal in our approach to caring for kids,” she emphasized.

“Back in the day, they used to say the whole community raises the child. Now, our lives have become so narrow that it’s difficult to get that kind of care. But we shouldn’t also be shy or ashamed to approach family and say, ‘Help me.’ ‘Look, I’m drowning. Can you help?’ because taking care of children is very difficult, especially when you have to work 9:00 to 5:00,” she explained.

“I think there has to be enough checks and balances to ensure that no one is abusing that trust that you have given to them.”
