The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has voiced its disappointment over the government’s failure to address sports development in the 2025 budget. According to them, it is a missed opportunity to invest in student athletics.
In a press release dated 12th March, 2025, NUGS lamented the government’s decision to exclude sports funding, despite making significant allocations to education, entrepreneurship, and skills development. The omission has sparked concerns about the future of university and school sports programs, which rely heavily on government support for infrastructure, training, and scholarships.
“Sports play a crucial role in student development, yet year after year, it remains an afterthought in national planning,” the statement read.
With Ghana’s growing reputation in international student sports competitions, many had anticipated increased funding to enhance training facilities and provide better opportunities for student-athletes. However, the absence of any mention of sports leaves institutions uncertain about their funding prospects.
NUGS is now calling on the government to clarify its stance on student sports funding in the upcoming sectorial budget presentation. Until then, student-athletes will continue to face the challenge of poor facilities and inadequate support, limiting their potential on both national and international stages.
