President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh has assured students both locally and internationally that their interests remain a top priority.

He made these comments at the sidelines of the 6th GAAS Higher Education Policy Dialogue on May 21, 2024, at the Kwame Nkrumah Auditorium.

The event, hosted by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, focused on the theme “Relations between The State and Public Universities in Ghana.

In exclusive interview with Univers News, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh highlighted on the relevance of policy dialogue on the student body.

” The main purpose of universities is to produce skillful intellectuals who are able to solve national issues. This aim is gradually being thwarted due to the lack of collaboration between university stakeholders and the government.
This policy dialogue serves to ensure having a national plan by all universities that government have to comply with to help benefit Ghanaians in the field of higher education”

Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh also added that there should be inclusivity for the youth in decision making as they are the main beneficiaries to any policy implemented.

“Students are direct beneficiaries of policies made and should be given the opportunity to voice out the ideas they have.
These ideas should not just be swept under the carpet but must be implemented by resource stakeholders responsible for its implementation for the betterment of the education system”

He also called on all student stakeholders to initiate and implement policies that would improve the well being of the country.
He believes this would give the needed grounds to lambast any other leader on higher levels of governance who fail to perform their duties diligently.

“Student leaders should roll their sleeves and invest in the direct development of the educational system. Projects such as the stipend scheme to set up an amount of money for persons with disability, the setting up of school blocks in the hinterlands for students who have never experienced sitting in a classroom amongst others are projects which have set the exemplary grounds for leaders in other sectors to emulate.
This would give the needed grounds to criticise the government for its failure to implement certain initiatives.”

Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh further assured all students that the association is doing its best to achieve the maximum in the educational sector regardless of any political affiliation.
