The Deputy Director General for Operations and Programs at the National Service Scheme (NSS), Hon. Fuseini Donkor, has clarified that the newly introduced military training program for national service personnel is not mandatory this year.

Speaking at the National Service Registration and Placement Orientation held on June 10, 2025, at the University of Ghana, Hon. Donkor announced that the program will begin with a pilot group of about 10,000 personnel.

However, he indicated that from next year onward, participation in the training will become compulsory for all service personnel.

“For this first year, we are starting the piloting with about 10,000 of you. The military training is coming on. It is taking off this August, but after this year, it is going to be mandatory. From next year ongoing, everyone is going to be part of it,” he stated.

The training initiative, officially named the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), was first mentioned by President John Dramani Mahama during his maiden State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025.

The president proposed the program as a short-term military training module for graduates to instill discipline and promote physical wellness.

Hon. Donkor also encouraged students to accept postings aligned with their fields of study to ensure more relevant and impactful service experiences.

“Whatever you studied, look at your market area. Identify one area where you can best get better training,” he advised.
