The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong call for the prosecution of individuals arrested during recent protests organized by the group Democracy Hub, which resulted in acts of vandalism, property destruction, and assaults on public officers.

This statement comes amid rising tensions, with many Ghanaians demanding accountability from both the police and the government in the wake of the unrest.

In a release dated September 26, 2024, the NPP youth wing expressed concern over the actions of “miscreants and hooligans” who have undermined peaceful demonstrations.

They emphasized the importance of law and order in maintaining national peace and security and urged the Ghana Police Service to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.

“We firmly believe that individuals who take the law into their own hands must be held accountable and face the full rigours of the law.”

While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protest, the youth wing stressed that violence and vandalism cannot be tolerated.

Such actions, they warned, threaten the very foundation of democracy and must be condemned.

“While we recognise and support the rights of all citizens to engage in peaceful and lawful demonstrations as enshrined in our constitution, however, it is important to emphasize that acts of vandalism, destruction of property, and other unlawful actions must be unequivocally condemned without fear of political, religious, or ethnic repercussions for speaking out against such acts.”

The NPP youth wing also cautioned that failing to prosecute these offenders could lead to a culture of impunity and embolden others to commit similar crimes.

“No one or group should be above the law, and crime must be punishable,” he added, underscoring the importance of justice to prevent future unrest.
