The government through the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) will begin the refund process of paying back fees of Level 100 students in the 2024/2025 academic year in June, this year.
The lastest development is part of the process by the John Mahama- led administration to fulfil a key campaign promise made during the electioneering period by the NDC to Ghanaian voters.
In a press release dated May 12 and signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the SLTF, Hajia Shajida Shiraz ,the Fund explained that the data will be verified against the total number of admissions given by public universities across the country for the academic year under review.
“We encourage all first year students of the various public universities across the length and breadth of the country to apply promptly to secure their reimbursements accordingly.
These refunds are in conformity with policy directives of the Ministry of Education and underpin the sacred commitment of the John Mahama- led government to invest heavily in education and empower the next generation of Ghanaians to get access to top quality education in our universities without financial burdens hampering their educational dreams and goals,” it added.
As part of the programme, the Mahama government is helping the students to get funds through the SLTF to fund their studies in the first year.
Speaking at his review of the 120-days social contract with the Ghanaian public on May 7, the President revealed that the cost of the policy is pegged at GHc 452,940,012.00 for the payment of fees for 156,294 first year students dotted across the public universities in the country.
