The National Identification Authority (NIA) has commenced the free distribution of Ghana Cards in the Greater Accra Region starting today, April 7, 2025. As part of the initiative, the NIA is urging the public to promptly report any cases of extortion by its staff.
The exercise targets the clearance of backlogged printed cards and accommodates new registrations at district offices across the region.
According to the Authority, individuals who applied for new cards, replacements, or updates to their records since June 2023 but have yet to receive their cards can now visit the respective offices where they registered to collect them.
Additionally, the NIA is calling on Ghanaians aged 15 years and above who have not yet registered to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting their nearest district office within the region to be enrolled in the national database.
A press release from the Authority clarified that both the printing of backlogged cards and new registrations are completely free of charge. The public is advised not to pay any fees for these services and to report any attempts at extortion by NIA staff.
However, the Authority noted that only card replacements and updates to existing personal information attract approved fees, which are clearly outlined on the NIA’s official website. First-time card issuance remains entirely free.
The NIA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all eligible Ghanaians are registered in the national identification system, which plays a vital role in policy planning and national development.
