Hosts Morocco overcame a nervy start to defeat Comoros 2–0 in the opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, December 21, 2025, as second-half goals from Brahim Díaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi secured a winning start for the Atlas Lions.
Despite their status as one of the tournament favourites and sitting 97 places above the Comoros in the FIFA world rankings, Morocco were made to work hard for the victory in rainy conditions at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.
The first half ended goalless, with Morocco dominating possession and pressing high up the pitch but struggling to turn control into clear-cut chances. Soufiane Rahimi missed a penalty, while Comoros defended resolutely, sitting deep and absorbing sustained pressure to keep the score level at the break.
Morocco continued to push after halftime and finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.
Noussair Mazraoui showed determination to keep the ball in play before cutting it back for Brahim Díaz, who calmly side-footed the ball home to ignite celebrations among the home crowd.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when substitute Ayoub El Kaabi produced a spectacular bicycle kick, just ten minutes after coming on, easing the tension and sealing the three points.
Although Morocco controlled long stretches of the contest, the match was far from straightforward, with Comoros earning credit for their disciplined defensive display.
The result hands Morocco an early advantage in Group A as they collect maximum points to kick off their AFCON 2025 campaign, with the tournament set to run until January 18, 2026.
