Minister of Lands and Mineral resources, Hon. Samuel Jinapor has encouraged citizens to participate in the upcoming National tree planting exercise on Friday June 9.
He was speaking at the R.S Amegashie Auditorium at the University of Ghana Business School on June 7th, 2023.
At the event, he stated that about 30 million trees have been planted through the Green Ghana project in 2022.
According to him, about 10 million trees have been targeted to be planted this year.
He believed that the initiative would aid in the reduction of global warming in the country.
“In 2021, we launched Green Ghana Project under which over 30 million trees were planted between 2021 and 2022. In two days time, specifically on Friday, June 9, 2023, we would hold the 3rd edition of the Green-Ghana Day where we have committed to plant at least 30 million trees.”
He called on civil societies and academic institutions to collectively educate citizens on the vulnerability and impact of global change.
“Civil societies must continually engage in outreach, academia institutions must continue researching and publish new information about climate vulnerability and impacts.”
He also encouraged the media to ensure accurate information reaches the population to educate them on such initiatives and their benefits.
“And of course the media must engage the dissemination of accurate information to educate the wider population on all these actions. This is a collective responsibility that must bear for each other in addressing climate change.”
The Green Ghana Day was introduced in 2021 by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo. It was introduced as part of a national programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and to contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change.
The maiden edition was held on 11 th June, 2021, where an estimated 7million tree seedlings were planted across the nation.
This year, the day will be celebrated on 9th June, 2023. It will target 10 million trees to be planted across the nation.
