Obeng Manu with Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed

Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed (Alhaji) was a father to all — quiet, unassuming, yet firm. Free with everyone, he never missed an opportunity to praise or correct.

I admired his candour and his long conversations. He was deeply interested in the progress of his mentees and would always ask what I was working on whenever I visited him in his office. He was never too busy to receive me on such occasions.

I took particular interest in Alhaji’s birthdays because I believe it is better to celebrate people while they are alive. That is why it pains me that I missed the send-off dinner in his honour during the Radio Univers at 30 Anniversary Celebration in 2025.

The last time I met Alhaji was at the University of Ghana Bookshop on January 19, 2026.

As usual, he shook my hand with a smile, and we had a chat. I apologised for my absence at the send-off dinner, but he was quick to say, with a smile, “I know you were part of the organisers.” He looked fit and well to me. That is why the news of his passing came as a great surprise.

Alhaji lived a life of impact, and I take solace in the fact that he was celebrated by the volunteers and the University he sacrificed so much for before his demise.

May he rest easy in the bosom of his Creator.
