The President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has announced plans to introduce a school agricultural programme for both secondary and tertiary institutions, under which each school will have the opportunity to operate its own farm. The initiative is aimed at promoting food security and encouraging self-sufficiency among students.

Speaking at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration held in Ho in the Volta Region on December 5, the President revealed his intention to soon roll out the programme. Under the initiative, secondary and tertiary schools will be required to establish farms to produce livestock and vegetable crops for their own consumption.

“I will soon launch the school agricultural program by asking all secondary and tertiary education institutions to have a school farm where they can produce their own chicken and vegetable crops.”

He added that the programme is already taking shape, with the appointment of a national school agricultural coordinator to ensure its effective and successful implementation.

“We have appointed a national school agricultural coordinator and soon we shall launch this program.”

The theme for the 2025 Farmers’ Day celebration was “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana in Order to Secure Our Future.”
