The Legon Fire Station has announced a comprehensive new strategy to reduce fire outbreaks across the University of Ghana campus, following a recent fire incident at Jean Nelson Hall that raised widespread concern over campus fire safety.

In an exclusive interview with Univers News, District Fire Commander DO II Abdulai Salia revealed that the strategy’s cornerstone is a full-scale assessment of all university facilities. The goal is to identify fire risks and strengthen prevention efforts through education, inspections, and collaborative safety planning.

“We are advising facility managers to always cooperate with the fire service when we come around to educate them, inspect their facilities, and check fire extinguishers,” Commander Salia stated. “We are supposed to do the inspection and, at the end of the day, give you our recommendations.”

As part of the plan, firefighters will be deployed to critical locations such as lecture halls, academic departments, and other key facilities. This increased presence aims to raise awareness, ensure safety compliance, and facilitate hands-on training for students and staff.

“There will be the deployment of firemen to the various lecture halls, departments, and facilities to increase visibility and support the training of students,” he added. “We have already written to the university authorities regarding this initiative.”
