Ghana record back-to-back defeats in first two pre-world cup friendlies

Germany snatched a late 2-1 victory over Ghana, with Deniz Undav scoring in the dying minutes to seal the win in an international friendly at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart.

The Germans dominated much of the first half, controlling possession and dictating the tempo, but struggled to break down a disciplined Ghanaian side until late in the opening period.

Germany threatened consistently through the creative partnership of Florian Wirtz and Serge Gnabry, while Joshua Kimmich pulled the strings from midfield.

A well-worked move saw Wirtz find the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside after Nick Woltemade was judged to have strayed beyond the last defender.

Ghana showed resilience early on, staying compact at the back and limiting clear-cut chances. Their first real attempt came in the 19th minute when Sibo’s awkward volley failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Despite a few promising moments, including a forward run from Oppong, the Black Stars struggled to shift the momentum as Germany continued to press.

The breakthrough eventually came for Germany, but Ghana responded strongly in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Issahaku Fatawu produced a moment of brilliance, firing a first-time strike from outside the box into the bottom corner to level the score.

The equaliser reignited Germany’s intensity, as they pushed forward in search of a winner. Ghana’s defence, led by Alexander Djiku, stood firm under pressure, with goalkeeper Asare also making crucial interventions.

However, the decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Undav latched onto a well-weighted pass inside the box and calmly finished into the top corner to restore Germany’s lead.

The result hands Germany a second friendly victory in a week, while Ghana suffers back-to-back defeats following their heavy 5-1  loss to Austria. Despite the loss, the Black Stars showed improved organisation and attacking intent, particularly in the second half.

With the World Cup just few months away, Germany will take confidence from their performance, while Ghana coach Otto Addo faces mounting pressure to turn things around.
