The Management of the Judicial Service has appealed to the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) to end the strike.
This came after JUSAG leaders called members to an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon and declared an indefinite strike.
In a press release on Thursday, May 25, the service said it had taken steps to resolve JUSAG’s salary and benefits issues with its executives, the government and the Attorney General’s Office.
“In line with precedence, the Ministry of Finance has agreed with the Judicial Service to meet on Wednesday 31 May 2023 for an engagement on the matter,”
They sought the cooperation of the JUSAG leadership in resolving the matter and assured the federation that the concerns they had expressed before the strike began would be resolved.
“To this end, Management of the Judicial Service is appealing to JUSAG to call off the strike action in order to participate in the above-mentioned engagement. This will ensure a timely resolution of the matter.”
The federation said an ultimatum issued by the government to process requests for approval of salary increases from January 2023 and approval of outstanding payments expired on May 19.
The association said it had previously sent a letter to President Akufo-Addo to approve the Judiciary Council’s recommendation to review the salaries and related benefits of judicial staff under Article 149 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
JUSAG also complained that living allowances were cut in December 2022 amid the country’s economic difficulties, concluding that members had shown sufficient patience.
Some people who were looking forward to being in court and hearing their case have expressed concerns.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Chapter of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) called on the government to intervene immediately in the strike by the Ghana Judicial Staff Association (JUSAG).
