Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has denied involvement in interdicting three senior officers linked to a leaked tape involving an alleged plot against him.
The individual claimed to have retracted himself from discussions about the leaked tape, and the decision to interdict the three officers was taken without his involvement.
The Police last week Thursday announced the interdiction of three senior officers due to their involvement in an audio recording, now under parliamentary scrutiny.
But the decision to interdict them was reversed.
“In order not to prejudice the ongoing probe [by Parliament], the Police administration has suspended their interdiction”, the press statement signed and issued by the Director of Police Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Grace Ansah-Akrofi explained in a statement.
The committee probing the leaked tape in which some senior police officers were heard allegedly plotting the removal of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Damapre, says the interdiction of some three senior officers was unnecessary.
Vice Chairman of the Committee James Agalga, during its sitting on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, said the Committee was displeased following the interdiction of the three officers when it came to their knowledge.
He noted that the committee was dissatisfied when it came to our knowledge that the officers had been interdicted as a result of the work of parliament.
We thought that it was inappropriate for the police service to have taken such a step, especially when they knew the committee had commenced an investigation and the witnesses had appeared before it.
He went on to state that it was considered the view of the committee that all witnesses who appear before the committee are protected and have certain immunities.
He assured witnesses who are set to appear before him that they have the protection of the state and cannot be intimidated by anyone.
He said witnesses who have appeared and are yet to appear have the protection of parliament.
