Some students from the University of Ghana’s Human Resource Management Students Association (HURMSA) have shared key takeaways after participating in a seminar organised by the Department of Organisation and Human Resource Management.

The seminar, dubbed “HR Sensitization: HR as a Catalyst for Personal and Professional Success,” was held at the R. S. Amegashie Auditorium of the University of Ghana Business School. It formed part of activities marking HURMSA’s 7th week-long celebration and aimed to equip students with practical knowledge and prepare them for the realities of the job market.

Participants described the event as insightful and empowering. One male HR student shared his thoughts:

“Today has been very insightful, and I’m glad I was here. I learned that HR is not a field meant only for females — that misconception was cleared up. HR is for both men and women. Also, I now understand that HR isn’t just about sitting in an office, signing leave forms or handling compensation cases. It’s much broader and more strategic.”

Another student highlighted the value of professional growth opportunities:

“At the end of the program, I’ve gained a lot. Some things about HR that I wasn’t aware of before were clarified, especially the opportunity for HR students to earn chartered status after tertiary education, both nationally and internationally.”

For some, the session offered a mindset shift on the interdisciplinary nature of the HR programme.

“I’m a BSc student majoring in HR. At first, I didn’t understand why I had to study finance or other non-HR courses. But after today’s session, I see the value in it. The panelists helped me realise that these courses complement HR and prepare us better. It’s really changed how I view my program,” one other mentioned.

The seminar is part of a series of events lined up by HURMSA to empower students and promote the relevance of HR in modern workplaces.
