The Ghana Sociological and Anthropological Association (GSAA) has expressed deep sorrow over the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, that claimed eight lives and left the nation in mourning.

In a statement issued at the close of its 9th Annual Conference at the University of Ghana, Legon, on Friday, August 8, 2025, the association conveyed condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the victims. It also affirmed solidarity with all those affected both in Ghana and abroad.

National Convenor, Professor William Boateng, underscored the importance of allowing official investigations into the crash to proceed without interference, encouraging citizens to support the relevant authorities to ensure a transparent and thorough process.

The GSAA further appealed to the public to act with compassion and sensitivity by refraining from circulating graphic images or videos of the victims. It emphasised that safeguarding the dignity of the deceased is vital to preserving societal values and aiding the healing process.

The August 6 crash occurred in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region when a Ghana Air Force helicopter carrying five senior government officials and three crew members went down, killing all on board.

The victims were:

  • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate and Deputy Director-General of the disaster relief agency

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot

  • Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, co-pilot

The victims were on an official assignment when the aircraft crashed. The tragedy has sparked national grief, with flags flown at half-mast and condolence messages pouring in from across the country. Investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway.

The GSAA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible citizenship, contributing to national recovery, and engaging in scholarly reflection on matters of public concern.
