The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Abass Ibrahim Moro, has warned that the union will have no option but to increase transport fares should the government fail to deliver on its promises and expectations surrounding the energy sector and fuel pricing.

Speaking to Univers Business ahead of the Mid-Year Budget Review tomorrow, Abass Moro explained that fare adjustments are only made when justified and stressed that drivers, like salaried workers, deserve fair conditions to support their families and livelihoods.

“We are planning how we could adjust ourselves so if those expectations are not met, then there would be no other choice but to increase fares.”

“We also deserve to earn something from our profession and be able to take care of our children,” he said.

Mr. Abass Moro also urged the government to address concerns surrounding fuel pricing and the broader energy sector ahead of tomorrow’s budget reading.

He noted that transport operators, as well as sectors like spare parts and food distribution, are expecting relief measures and clearer communication.

“We expect government to focus on the energy sector for clearer direction.”

“We were looking at reductions, especially in the food sector, but that hasn’t happened. Without relief, we’ll have no choice but to raise fares to sustain a reasonable living”, he said.
