The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, has assured that the new GH¢1 energy sector levy will not lead to an increase in public transport fares.
Speaking to Univers Business today, he explained that transport fares are reviewed independently and the public is always informed of any changes.
“We have never said that if the GH¢1 Energy sector levy takes off, we were going to increase public transport fares. We have never said that anywhere. Public transport fares are on their own, and if the need arises, we normally come up, officially, to explain to the public why we either need to increase or decrease fares.”
Mr. Abbas Moro added that law enforcement agencies are responsible for ensuring that drivers do not overcharge, and as such, any driver found doing so would face the law.
“For now, public transport fares remain unchanged so any driver who increases fares will be dealt with by law enforcement agencies,” he said.
