The Deputy Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA) in charge of Programmes and Operations, Lieutenant Colonel Moses Dok Nach Kpeungu, has indicated that the government will decide at the appropriate time whether to increase allowances for National Service Personnel (NSP).
His comments follow public concerns over why the government has not increased allowances, despite the Authority reporting a reduction in its payroll expenditure from GH¢1.5 billion to GH¢700 million after the removal of ghost names.
Speaking on The Public Sphere show on Radio Univers, Lt. Col. Kpeungu noted that while the reforms have created some financial relief, they do not automatically justify an upward adjustment in allowances.
“We cannot spend everything we have today and go hungry tomorrow. The mere fact that we have been able to save some money from the National Service payroll does not necessarily mean that we should return all the savings and risk facing a crisis the next day,” he said.
“However, at the right time, the government, in its own wisdom, will decide whether to increase the National Service allowance or not,” he added.
