Government releases new pricing for the reinstatement of road tolls

The government has revised the schedules of the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022, (Act 1080).
The amendments are in line with the government’s intention to restart collecting tolls on some roads pending the completion of the steps to identify the roads and highways to be affected by the reintroduction of the tolls. To this end, the Ministry of Finance has commenced the procedures, necessary to determine the toll foundation rates while the Ministry of Roads and Highways considers them.

This was contained in a letter signed by the sector Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and addressed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

The letter explained the proposed rates were for inputs by the Roads Ministry to enable the Finance Ministry to complete the schedule of fees.

Per the letter, there has been an 88.05% increment in all rates but the letter was silent on when the collection will start.

The road tolls were cancelled in last year 2022 after Mr Ofori-Atta read the year’s budget in Parliament introducing the Electronic Transaction Levy to rake up more revenue from a larger section of the public.
However, after revenue shortfalls from the e-Levy, the Minister announced a reintroduction of the tolls in the 2023 budget read on Thursday, November 24, 2022.
