Former Radio Univers volunteer and current Media General show host Giovani Caleb has disclosed that he has never attended a job interview since completing his undergraduate studies — a feat he attributes to the Radio Univers certificate and the hands-on experience he gained at the station.

He made this revelation as the special guest of honour at a send-off dinner held for level 400 newsroom volunteers at the Volta Hall Dining Hall on September 15, 2025.

“There are certain things this certificate does for you that your regular university certificate does not. Some of us have never had to sit before any panel to be interviewed for a job. I didn’t even have to apply for a job — thanks to Radio Univers,” Giovani said.

Reflecting on his journey, Giovani shared that although he was unsure of the career path to pursue in his final year at the University of Ghana, one thing was clear — he had to be at Radio Univers.

“It’s a beautiful feeling to be here again. For some of us, we missed our graduation, but we didn’t miss something like this. At some point in final year, we were so confused about what the future held for us. We knew we had to take Radio Univers seriously, or we would have had a lot of explaining to do about why we didn’t get a first-class in the lecture hall. Just as someone would say — ‘Radio Univers or die,’” he added.

He also spoke about the growing competition in the media industry, noting that the landscape is filled with skilled professionals from different backgrounds, making practical experience an invaluable advantage.

“You’re going to be competing against people who never had the opportunity to be on campus radio, but they are equally very good at what they do. Being here gives you confidence money cannot buy. Trust me, it gives you a network of people you can call anytime the journey feels tough,” he said.

Giovani concluded with a challenge to the graduating volunteers, encouraging them to live up to expectations and seize future opportunities.

“Our doors are open. I know personally that I’m now in a position to recruit, so I’ll be coming to knock on certain doors. And I hope when that time comes, you don’t disappoint me,” he said.

The night was a memorable one for the volunteers, who left feeling inspired and motivated by Giovani’s testimony of how Radio Univers shaped his career and opened doors that many only dream of.
