Ghanaian clubs make group stages berth in CAF inter-club competitions after 11 years

Reigning champions of the Ghana Premier league, Medeama SC and MTN FA Cup winners, Dreams FC have both secured group stage spots for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup respectively.

Medeama SC have become the first Ghanaian club in over a decade to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League after Berekum Chelsea in the 2012 edition.

Medeama qualified for the 2023/24 edition of the CAF champions league competition after a comprehensive 4-3 aggregate victory in the two legged tie of the second round of the preliminary qualifier of the Champions League.

On the other hand, Dreams FC managed to secure a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought battle on Saturday which seals their first ever group stage qualification with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline. The MTN FA cup champions had an advantage of a 2-1 scoreline from the first leg against Sierra Leone’s Kallon FC in Ghana.

Dreams FC are the first team from Ghana to compete in the Confederations Cup group stages since Asante Kotoko in 2019, which was led by coach CK Akonnor.

The ‘Still Believe’ lads and Medeama SC are set to receive a huge financial boost of $550,000 from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after securing a historic qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage.

For the first since 2006, Ghana will have two teams competing in the group stages of the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup.

After the remarkable feats of both teams, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has shared congratulatory messages to both Medeama SC and Dreams FC for their remarkable performance In the CAF interclub competitions.

In a post on Facebook, the GFA President expressed joy and admiration for the outstanding achievement by the aforementioned clubs.

 “Congratulations to both Medeama SC and Dreams FC for qualifying to the group stage of their various CAF competitions. Ayekooo.”

Fellow Ghanaian football club, Asante Kotoko also had comments to make over the historic feat. On their X, formerly Twitter page, they congratulated the teams and expressed their support in them ahead of the bigger tasks.

“From all of us at Asante Kotoko, we say a big congratulations for making it to the group stages of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. Medeama SC and Dreams FC, You have our support.”

Both Medeama and Dreams FC have now secured a spot in the ‘money zone’ of the competitions, where they will face tougher opponents and have the opportunity to heave up the flag of Ghana in subsequent games.
