The General Secretary of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Henry Yao Boni, has revealed that the federation risks demotion and possible disqualification from upcoming international competitions due to a lack of government funding.
His remarks follow concerns over what the federation describes as unfair treatment in the allocation of funds for the national tennis teams and individual players.
Speaking on Sports Night on Radio Univers, Mr. Boni disclosed that the federation has not received financial support from the state for the past 15 years.
“The federation has not received any funding from the state for the past 15 years,” he stated.
According to him, repeated attempts to secure support from the Ministry of Sports have yielded no response.
“We have sent budgets consistently to the ministry over the years and did not get any response, so we had to look somewhere else for funding,” he explained.
Mr. Boni further described the current situation as frustrating, noting that the federation may be unable to participate in international competitions scheduled for June and July due to financial constraints.
According to a communiqué released by the federation, Ghana risks disqualification from the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup if the country fails to participate in the 2026 qualifiers scheduled for Nairobi in June and Gaborone in July.
Mr. Boni, however, praised corporate institutions including McDan Group, Stanbic Bank Ghana, MTN Ghana and Telecel Ghana for supporting the federation through difficult times.
He finally urged the Ministry and government to pay equal attention to other sporting disciplines beyond football, athletics and boxing, stressing that other sports also have the potential to elevate Ghana’s image internationally.
