The Ghana Premier League is set to resume after the Accra Human Rights Court dismissed Ashanti Gold’s court injunction on the League.
Ashanti Gold filed for an injunction on the Ghana Premier League to show their dissatisfaction over the Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee’s decision to relegate the club to the Division 2 league after they were found guilty of match manipulation at the end of the 2020/21 GPL season.
The miners then sent the GFA to court, leading to the suspension of the league on 29th September 2022 by the FA.
The presiding judge of the case, Barbara Tetteh-Charway in her ruling, indicated that on the balance of hardship, the Ghana Football Association would suffer more than AshantiGold should the league remain halted.
The GFA then asked the court for GHC 300,000 in damages for the league’s 21-day suspension, and the lawyer for the Obuasi-based club stated that they would leave the matter to the court but later stated that they were willing to pay GHC 20,000, which was granted by the judge.
Ashgold was demoted along with Inter Allies to the Division Two League after being found guilty of match-fixing after the Miners Defeated Inter Allies 7-0 in the 2020/21 season with Ashgold President Dr. Kwaku Frimpong and Chief Executive Emmanuel Frimpong as well as receiving long-term bans from football.
The players, however, were successful in obtaining a stay of execution from the Court of Arbitration for sport allowing them to register with new clubs.
Before the suspension, the league had reached the fourth matchday with Brekum Chelsea leading the table.
