The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is expected to release new COVID -19 restrictions due to global threats of the corona virus disease (COVID-19). This directive follows recent alarming surge of COVID-19 cases in China and other foreign countries, which threatens to develop a new wave of the various, given its relatively low vaccine coverage.
However, the change in global situation, particularty with reported increase in new cases, in China and other countries, as well as Ghana’s relatively low vaccination coverage poses a major threat of the importation and a new wave of COVID-19 infection in the country.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and spreads from an infected person’s mouth or nose in insignificant liquid particles. Ghana confirmed its first cases on March12, 2020 with over 1000 deaths recorded in Ghana only.
The Service has thereby tasked Ghanaians to take advantage of available vaccination schemes, to eradicate chance of a possible outbreak of the disease. Consequently, the GHS intents to come up with specific measures to tackle the current threat of COVID 19, as the service in liason with key stakeholders study the trend of cases in the especially with regards to importation.
Meanwhile Ghanaians are being encouraged to avail themselves for vaccination, available at various health centers.
We want to use this opportunity to encourage all Ghanaians who have not availed themselves for the COVID-19 vaccination to do so. Those who have taken their first dose are to go for the second dose and those who have taken their second dose are also entreated to go for the booster. Vaccination remains the best protection against COVID 19 infection.
